Poker Position - Just How Important is It?

Poker Position - Just How Important is It?
Once you have mastered the basics of Texas Hold'em you will quickly discover that your position during a hand will affect how you should play. Many players soon realise that their relative position affects their game, but most underestimate just how important it can be. This is as a result of the dealer moving the button around per turn, in order to ensure that all players present are required to pay a blind.
It is important that you appreciate the value that poker plays, as well as the relationship between the amount of information you have and the value of it. Put simply, the more information you possess the more effective your tactical decisions will be. If you act blind, then you will find that you rush into trouble.
The majority of hands will typically involve position as a factor of major importance, and so if we are to learn and progress, we too must examine the table is divided according to position. First and foremost, there is the so called early position which will include all blinds and which is located immediately after the dealer button. Without a doubt these are the most challenging to try and play, because you will have all players behind you and you will have no idea as to how powerful their hands are.
The next three spots moving clockwise are dubbed "middle position" and from this vantage point you will only see the actions and choices of a select few players. When you move to the so called late position (AKA the next 3 seats) most of the players will have actually played their hand which means you are in a better position to know what their hand is. Therefore you will be able to alter your strategy as appropriate.
Just to clarify: in this particular scenario, the blinds are typically acting last however this is only because you are currently in the first bout of action. In other words, in all other rounds the roles are reversed and so it is the blinds that will be played first with the dealer's buttons submitted last. The buttons are more strategically useful after the flop has passed and it is for that reason then stealing blinds is a commonly relied upon strategy.
Now that you can more clearly perceive the layout of the table, let us consider a hand scenario that will vary according to the position held. Let us say for argument's sake that you happen to possess a ten and a seven of the same suit and you decide to submit a raise of $3. The player beside you matches your aggression, placing a bid of $5, and another player seeking to jump on the bandwagon, decides to raise it even further, to $10. In such a case, what is the best way forward? After all, you are not in a prime position here, and you have another major variable hovering in the balance: the player after you. You have no way of knowing what he will play, but rest assured, what he DOES play will be influenced by what you decide to play. The worst thing about this kind of hand is that you cannot predict or foretell just how much this particular hand will cost you in the long run.
On the other end of the spectrum let us consider that you happen to possess the same hand for the cutoff and that there is a grand total of four limpers playing behind you. Based on the plays thus far, you assume that all of the players thus far have rather poor hands that will need some support when it comes to the flop. One option is to reraise the bet, however, it is important to note that when it comes to a hand such as this you could secure an advantage for yourself by limping. This may seem too much like leaving the game to chance, i.e. a risky and inadvisable move. However, limping in these sort of situations is actually a very credible and solid idea because it is possible to secure yourself a very large jackpot indeed which will more than cover your costs. The only thing to make sure in these sort of situations is to ensure that you actually have enough money to keep yourself afloat.
Please note though that a lot of flops are going to go right past you and so if you go in too cheap, you will be cutting the odds of you recouping your losses. Position is king in poker and so it is a variable that should be exploited for full use. As your experience grows, so will your confidence as to how to use the position effectively.
Position is even more important in Texas Hold'em, in fact, it is entirely possible for a single hand to win a match, and therefore a decent appreciation for how it works is crucial!

Phil Ivey Is The Master Of Poker

Phil Ivey Is The Master Of Poker
When it comes to high stakes cash games the fans are usually talking about Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius or Tom Dwan (also known as "durrrr"). Phil Ivey is a much-feared player because of his extremely aggressive style and his great hand reading skills.
The following example comes from the 2009 WSOP where Phil Ivey was paid out at the end only because of his reputation.
The blinds are $2 000/$4 000 with a $500 ante and 9 players. Everyone folds to Ivey who is on the button and has 8d7s. Ivey decides to take a stab at the pot and raises to $11 000. A typical play by Ivey, he would do it with any two cards so his raise does not tell anything about the strength of his hand. The small blind folds but Perner in the big blind makes a reasonable call with 2h2d. Although Perner's call is reasonable, I suppose a reraise would have been the right play. When he called he already knew that he would be in a tough situation with a pair of deuces every time except when the deuces hit. Based on this statement a reraise can end up with more success because he could win the pot right there, before the flop. Such small pocket pairs are extremely difficult to play out of position. In this case Perner decided to only call. The pot is $28 500 and the two players see the flop.
The flop is 7cJh7h giving Ivey trip sevens. A paired flop is usually good for a pocket pair because it makes it more probable that the other player missed the flop. Perner thinks also like this and he bets about 75% of the pot, $22 000. Perner had the preflop advantage 52%-48% against Ivey but the tides have turned in favor of Ivey: 89%-11%. He thinks a bit how he could maximize his win and makes a flat call. At this time it is not clear if Perner only bluffs or if he has a pair of Jacks. Ivey hopes it is the 2nd case scenario. The pot is $72 500.
The turn card is the 8h. This is a dangerous card for Perner. He knows that Ivey can have any two cards in his hand and this turn card completes a flush draw, a straight draw and of course it is possible that Ivey has a pair of eights as well. Perner checks, he wants to see what Ivey does. Ivey bets a little over half of the pot, $40 000. Ivey wants to build a pot and does not want to slow play his hand until the end. Perner calls quickly and sends a message to Ivey that he also hit the board. I am convinced that Perner made a mistake at this point and he should have quit with his hand. The pot is $152 500.
The river card is the 7d, giving Ivey quads and Perner a full house. Perner checks and Ivey starts thinking what the maximum amount is that he could get from Perner. Ivey decides to bet $120 000, about 80% of the pot, a big bet which indicates a bluff. Actually the river card is unlucky for Perner. In case Ivey had a straight or a flush Perner would be ahead now. There are also three sevens on the board so it is very unlikely that Ivey has a seven. Perner beats many of Ivey's possible hands, he is only losing against a Jack, an eight or pocket pairs. Perner does not even think long and makes the call. Ivey wins the $392 500 pot with his quads.

Do You Have The Patience To Be A Successful Tournament Poker Player?

Do You Have The Patience To Be A Successful Tournament Poker Player?
To be successful at the poker tables in tournament play you need to develop patience and discipline. Too many bad players get all over enthusiastic and think that they must play each hand they are dealt right through. That is not a good idea and they will lose more often than not. If you don't want that to be you then you simply must have the patience to know what hands to play and which to fold without wasting your chips and progress through the tournament.
In tournament poker play your object is to stay in the tournament for as long as you can, ultimately to win it if possible though at minimum make a money finish to put you in profit. Throwing your chips in on each and every hand will get you an adrenaline rush, sure, though it'll see you knocked out early as players with better hands take your chips off you.
So patience an essential skill for you to develop. If you get bad hole cards, fold. If you think you are beaten, fold. Wait for the better hands to come your way and play them accordingly. This is of particular relevance in the early stages when the blinds are low. There's no need to get involved in the early skirmishing and jeopardise your chances at this point unless you're sure you have "the nuts" (best hand). Have the patience to let the others ruin their chances and let a few fall by the wayside. Hang in there, protect your chip stack and see yourself through to the later stages.
As the blinds increase and the number of opponent left in falls you may have to open up a bit and play more hands though by being patient in the earlier stages and only playing premium hands you have kept your chances of a money finish alive, got a read on your opponents and can now open your shoulders.
By playing tight early you have built yourself a stable image in the minds of your opponents of a strong player who plays good hands only and plays them with aggression to force out those with poorer hands. You must do this not to get caught by someone hanging in there hopping for a miracle as when that miracle comes it will hurt you.
Another by-product of your patience and strong play is that it can help set you up for successful bluffing when the time comes for that as it often can do in tournament poker. For example it's the late stages with say four people left. You have not great hole cards though are last to act and your opponents have bet the minimum or folded to you possibly indicating they have nothing also. A good, strong bet from you at this point could cause them all to fold and win you the pot as you have conditioned them that you only get involved when you have a good hand.

Win Heads Up Poker Without Thinking

Win Heads Up Poker Without Thinking
Heads up poker is a great option for when you are tired and not in a mental position to excel at a larger ring game or tournament. When I find myself in such a position, I employ what I call the brainless heads up poker strategy.
In a nutshell, here's what I do:
Every hand when not in the big blind, I raise 10% of the pot. The big blind will often fold and you'll collect chips quickly.
When the big blind calls, after the flop, regardless of what cards are flopped, I go all in. The big blind will usually fold and, as you can see, your stack is quickly becoming dominant.
At some point in the process, usually after you've built up a fairly substantial chip lead, the big blind will come over the top and re-raise, sometimes going all in. The response to any such raise is an all in bet, again with the frequent result of collecting chips along the way.
This same strategy is used when in the big blind. The first bet will be a raise to 10% of the pot unless the initial bet is already that large. If the initial bet is already 10%, then I raise all in, again eliciting many folds and the rapid acquisition of chips.
Now I can hear many of you screaming, but I'm going to end up all in against a superior hand! While this is true, you'll find that because you have whittled down your opponent's chip stack and he is desperate, just by chance your hand will often be superior. You've doubtless noticed that this heads up poker strategy makes not mention of what cards you hold, because that issue is completely irrelevant. You are playing your opponent, not the cards.
The beauty of this strategy when it comes to playing heads up is that regardless of the cards you hold and your opponent holds, you usually won't be far behind in any showdown. Generally speaking, a third of the time or more you'll win a showdown even with the worst beginning hand. By utilizing this heads up strategy, even when you lose your superior chip stack will allow you to try again.
Another benefit of this brainless heads up strategy is that it will help you get through the tournaments quickly, allowing you to play more and more tournaments. This is important because you cannot, regardless of how you play, win them all. By winning 60% of the time, however, you'll quickly build a large bankroll.
Of course, there are many more things you need to understand to be a great, profitable, heads-up player, which is why I developed my Heads-Up Poker Profits program, which has helped hundreds of online heads-up poker players become very profitable. Its available at
Good luck!
